PTSD

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster or global pandemic, a car accident, the death of a loved one, abuse, or sexual assault. PTSD symptoms are generally grouped into four types: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions. Symptoms may include nightmares or unwanted memories of the trauma, avoidance of situations that bring back memories of the trauma, heightened reactions, anxiety, or depressed mood.

First responders, such as emergency personnel,  police, firefighters and paramedics, among other healthcare professionals are particularly vulnerable to experiencing trauma related symptoms. Treatment includes different types of trauma-focused psychotherapy as well as medications to manage symptoms. At CPS, we utilize trauma focused CBT, exposure therapy, and somatic techniques to treat the trauma-related symptoms.
