Addictive Disorders
At CPS, we approach addictive disorders by uncovering the root cause of addiction and addressing any underlying trauma or psychiatric disorders often contributing to the need for self medication. Research demonstrates a strong link between exposure to traumatic events and substance use problems. Individuals with a history of abuse and exposure to traumatic events often find comfort in alcohol or drugs to manage emotional pain, intrusive memories, poor sleep, guilt, shame, and anxiety. While use of alcohol or drugs can provide a temporary distraction and relief from discomfort, it can increase emotional numbing, social isolation, anger and irritability, depression, and hyper vigilance.
